About
Backstory
Long ago, there lived a family of foxes in a shrine in the northern Gensui Chain, in the hills and sparse forest a short way from a paddy village. They enjoyed access to summer planting festivals and autumn harvest festivals, as well as served as bad karma for villagers who were too boastful or rude; often thieving from them and treating themselves to their fare, but their more harmless tricks were played in a less discriminatory way.
One day, a young military commissioner came through the wood, hunting foxes for their livers to prepare medicine, he left traps on the forest floor that he would return to in the morrow. One of the foxes, making way back to the shrine, became ensnared with stolen azuki soaking in her chops. A farmer who had been bringing his rice to the Drunken Toad happened upon her, recognizing the beans and accusing the creature of theft. The fox only retorted, so the farmer turned to continue through the forest. When he did, the fox made a racket, she begged him to free her. When he only continued to walk, the fox offered a fox's promise in return, whatever he would like - this brought the man to pause.
The man explained of Doma's king to the fox, and of the brutal taxations and demands their little farming village faced; if the fox could help improve the village’s crop yield and quality, and ensure the village could continue to sustain and preserve itself, then he would let her go. She gave him a fox’s promise it would be done, and so the man released her, fixing her wounded leg in some cloth before she leaped over his head and took off into the forest.
Under a full moon hung at its highest, the fox descended into the village. She rearranged its stone walkways to perform a ritual that would improve the quality of the land. From the next day forward the fields began to yield crops three times as fast, and its rice rather than be processed eighty-eight times seemed only to need to be processed forty-four. When eaten one found the grown fare carried the most unique, enhanced, delicious flavor. Though the outsourcing of the village's harvest increased, their own bellies were no more empty. The little paddy village became known as Subarashi Shokin, and was rumored to have been blessed by a mysterious wandering Geomancer, or perhaps someone had done something to gain favor of a the Kami.
Upon a winter's passage, the fox returned to the farmer to ask him if she had fulfilled her promise. Eight thousand times over, yes, the man responded. The farmer, who had been cooking at the time of her visit, invited the fox inside for a meal. The fox agreed, enjoying food, drink, and company until the cock crowed, upon which hour she returned to the woods - though not without an emboldened fascination for the race of man and want for more of its company.
The hat thou lovedst,
Reed-wove, tricked out with damask,
Ah me, hath blown away,
Into the One River-
Blown amidst the current.
While I wandered seeking it,
While I wandered searching it,
Day-dawn came, day-dawn came
Ah, the sawa-sawa
Of that rustling night of autumn,
There by the water,
The spread-out, rustling water
